A new year and another CKO Kickboxing success story! In Danielle's own words...
I never thought of myself as a heavy person but always knew I should lose some weight to be healthier. I found myself constantly looking for something to help me lose weight. I drove by CKO North Brunswick on my way to work every day and always wondered if it would help. I had tried every program to help me with weight loss (weight watchers, diet foods etc.) and I would lose some weight but I would always put it back on again. I finally decided to take a chance and scheduled my first CKO class in April 2013. I was hooked from day one and signed up immediately! The energy from the class was unbelievable, it was hard but I did not care! I knew I could take this class and have some fun! I came to class religiously and noticed little by little I was getting stronger, leaner and faster each time I came in; I was excited... was this actually going to work this time?
Then came the Ring! I got engaged in September of 2013 around the same time they were starting the 10 week challenge. I signed up! I was really motivated now. I started the challenge at 178 pounds and listened to every single thing Linda told me to do. I even did some personal nutrition counseling with her after the challenge was completed and religiously attended CKO classes where Nick and all of his trainers continued to push me. They know how to motivate and make you do one more push up or run a bit faster each class. I was constantly supported, motivated and cheered for during this whole process. A total of 43 pounds later and 5 CKO bags knocked down, I am now at my goal weight of 135 pounds. I feel amazing! I am strong, healthy and confident! To this very day, each class I take, I get stronger and develop strength throughout my whole body. There is a constant positive gain (whether it is physically, mentally or both) with CKO Kickboxing.
Walking in the front door of CKO truly changed my life; I am healthier, stronger and continuously excited to take another class at this gym. Nick and Linda and all of the North Brunswick trainers are so supportive, motivating and continuously improving their own skill set to ensure we are receiving the best training, the best advice and the best workout around. This is my favorite place in the whole world, and through this organization I have learned a truly invaluable lesson of healthy eating habits and perseverance to push on and work hard to reach my goals.
We love when our members write us with their stories of success and inspiration. This particular story comes from CKO North Brunswick member Michelle.
Two years ago I saw myself as just a typical girl who ate whatever I pleased and maybe worked out if I felt up for it. Then, I found CKO North Brunswick and it officially changed my life! I've lost weight, gained muscle in all the right places, and more importantly I finally feel sexy and confident!
Of course, I've never in a million years saw myself punching or kicking a 130 pound bag. It sounds crazy, but after my first one-hour class, I couldn't wait to come back and punch some more! From the large number of classes provided, to the fun fundraisers I get to participate in, I truly met some awesome people who have become family to me... especially the trainers! They endorse you with motivation, and are with you every step of the way; pushing you to your limits. Who wouldn't love that?!
CKO Kickboxing is not like any other gym. Along with their kickboxing classes, CKO North Brunswick also offers personal training*, which I got involved with a few months ago. I have never felt more confident in my entire life thanks to Nick Lancetti! In the beginning, Nick wanted me doing all these crazy things like squats holding a medicine ball, push ups, weights, pad work, ropes... the list goes on and on! I looked at him like he was crazy, but he pushed me to my limits and I am now doing squats no problem, my punching has a lot more power, and my balance is on point. I am SO addicted... to the point where I get upset if I'm busy or too sore to take a class. It has officially become my second home, and I have no problem admitting it!
Two years ago I was just some typical girl. Today I am a strong, lean and confident woman, and I owe it all to CKO North Brunswick!
*Inquire with your local club to see if they offer personal training options.
This past weekend proved to be a HUGE success for CKO Kickboxing as we took part in the NBC4 New York Giants Health and Fitness Expo at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey! Take a look at some of the articles, photos and videos from the incredible event!
While the two-day expo featured more than 100 booths with demonstrations and information about different health topics, those who attended the small kickboxing sessions held by CKO Kickboxing on Sunday said they believed the increasingly popular workout was the best way to keep fit.
This inspiring testimonial comes to us from CKO North Brunswick member, Marc Rios. Congratulations Marc on your incredible achievements thus far. Keep up the great work!
In Marc's own words...
For most of my life I have struggled with my weight. From around the age of ten, I was overweight with bouts of semi-fitness. While in high school, I was moderately involved in sports but never really considered myself an athlete. Once I graduated, my struggles only became more apparent and haphazard. I would cut weight and then balloon back up, most of the time ending up heavier than my starting weights. I followed fad diets, trained hard and even completed several marathons, but never really stuck with any of the work. I used the excuses that everyone always hears. I had my job, two children at home, and night school that filled my time. There was just no time to work out and take care of myself. The years just started to fly by, and the next thing I knew I was 37 years old and nearly 270 pounds. It took being denied the ability to donate blood, to wake me up to realize my health was in jeopardy. I decided it was time for a change.
In July 2013, I was recommended to try CKO North Brunswick to help kick start my training for the upcoming NYC Marathon. I was training pretty regularly, but just didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. I had constant pain in my lower back, my knees, and my ankles. I knew my weight was causing all of these issues so I figured I would give it a shot. Walking into the gym for the first time was intimidating. Everyone in the gym looked fit and controlled and I thought I was out of my league. Instead, what I found was a great trainer who recognized my concerns and worked with me. I followed his instructions, paced myself as best I could, and by the time I was finished with class, I was hooked. From then on, I dedicated myself to changing my life. I start attending several classes a week. The trainers were amazing, no two workouts were the same, and I was never bored or stuck in a rut. While the weight came off, which was great, the best part was how fit I felt for the first time in my life. I felt stronger and healthier. I had more energy and stamina than I’d ever had before, and the pains in my joints and back went away. Suddenly, I could see changes in my physique in the mirror. By November, I was strong enough to complete the New York City Marathon with my personal best time.
By January, I took the next step and joined the Ten Week Challenge. This proved to be just as important in my training. Adding the nutritional guidance I received, I was able to take my efforts to a new level. The weight kept coming off and my diet was fueling me with new energy. I revamped my diet, adding healthier options and eliminating so many poor food choices. The result, simply put, was being in the best shape of my life. In these last eight months, I have lost 72 pounds, 10 inches off my waist, and transformed my body and mind. I weigh less now than I did at my high school graduation. I am strong enough now to run 40+ miles per week, Spin three days a week, and still take 5 classes a week at CKO Kickboxing.
While I haven’t finished my work, these milestones just help to fuel my overall goal; a healthy and fit way of life, strong maintenance of my body and smart choices in diet. CKO Kickboxing has changed my life. The gym, the trainers and my fellow members have changed my life and given me back a healthy outlook and lifestyle.
The CKO Kickboxing "Ten Week Challenge" is the perfect way to jumpstart your journey to a fitter, healthier you. The regimen generates maximum results in a short amount of time, and the below testimonial is proof of the benefits one can achieve from the program.
In her own words...
I had completely given up on fitness and I could not tap into my mental state that said, “Just do it” anymore. I played sports most of my life, had gym memberships, and I even ran the Marine Corps and NYC Marathon. However, it all slowly changed after having children. My excuse was lack of time and energy. The gym was not motivating enough, especially after being discouraged time and time again with no real results. In addition to not exercising, I began skipping breakfast, ate processed sandwiches in popular coffee shops for lunch, and by the time I ate dinner, (after eating the kids leftovers) it was pretty late and close to bedtime. This went on for about six years. Then it all caught up to me when my yearly physical results insulted my psyche. My cholesterol was through the roof and that was my turning point. No energy, overweight, clothes no longer felt comfortable.. and now I was getting sick.
Feeling frustrated and defeated one sleepless night a few days after New Year’s, I surfed the web looking for a fitness solution or a diet plan. That’s when I came upon the website of CKO Kickboxing, and ever since then (really) I have taken charge of my body and health. On Monday, January 6th, 2014, I walked through the doors of CKO Kickboxing - Madison and attended the 10 Week Challenge program orientation with Joe Andreula. Needless to say, I joined on the spot. I was excited to be back in a healthy environment with people working towards the same goals. However, this time I had some help. Denise (trainer from CKO Madison) counseled me on nutrition and held me accountable by reviewing my weekly diet log to monitor, educate, and help me break my poor eating habits. Adam (also a trainer from CKO Madison) met me every Monday night for strength training in the weight room, and all the passionate instructors on the heavy bags yelling, “Attack, Attack, Attack!!” were my incentives to commit and stay focused. Where are we going to be in 100 years Mike?
So, I hit the ground running and began taking kickboxing classes five times a week. My muscles screeched every night. I was in pain, but the saying “If you’re not puking or dying, keep going”, taunted me and I just pushed through it, got in my car and kept showing up. I was tired, but focused. Exhausted, but empowered. Aching, but committed to change.
The results: In the 10 Week Challenge program, I lost 20 pounds, 8 % body fat, and my cholesterol dropped from 301 to 188 and is now under control. Amazing! Nothing in life is easy and we all know that. It is all about how much you are willing to work towards your goals to make it happen. I was ready to make a change and CKO Kickboxing guided me through it.
CKO Kickboxing made me realize that there is always time in the day to exercise. They also helped me figure out a realistic plan and schedule that worked for me. Successful people plan. Whether they are writers, actors, engineers, lawyers, or public speakers, they all map out how they will execute the plan, and sometimes that is half the battle. My 4th grade students ask me every few days, “Did you go to the gym again?” They were in with my plan, because we all wrote down our New Year Resolutions for class. The same way I wanted them to keep their promises, they wanted me to keep mine. I wanted to model what it means to stay committed, focused, and consistent. I just signed up for a year membership because now I want to reach new levels by incorporating weights and kickboxing as a lifestyle. Thank you CKO Madison!

In Kenton's own words...
When I joined CKO Kickboxing in West Caldwell 9 months ago, I was proud that I had already lost 50 pounds, but I had hit a wall - my third weight loss plateau. I realized then that the many hours I was spending on my elliptical and exercise bike were no longer giving me results, so I decided to try something new, cardio kickboxing.
After doing 15 minutes of jumping jacks, squats, planks, sprints, bear crawls and burpees in Karleen's class, I was gasping for all the oxygen in the room. When she had us run around the gym with 15 pound medicine balls over our heads, I was tempted to keep running toward my car. I looked around the room to see if anyone else in class was in the same pain. They weren't. They were specially trained "JAB-CROSS-HOOK" soldiers ready for heavy-bag battle. I, on the other hand, was more like a civilian driving on base in a Smart Car, looking for cronuts. I finished the class and came back for more. I came back the next day as well. It worked.
Nine months later, I've lost 102 pounds! I sprint every lap and I'm in the best shape of my life. Attending classes at CKO Kickboxing has increased both my mental and physical toughness. I’m more motivated to eat healthier, and I’ve now started doing other fun physical activities such as dodge ball and kickball. I plan to start running as well, if it ever stops snowing in Jersey.
I love the workouts at CKO Kickboxing because they are designed for maximum results. I know when I walk through the door that I’ll get a full body workout in about an hour. Since I’ve been going to classes at CKO in West Caldwell, we’ve used jump ropes, free-weights, medicine balls, pull-up bars, and much more.
At CKO West Caldwell, we also often do drills with partners to fine tune our punching and kicking techniques, and to push each other. CKO Kickboxing promotes an environment of healthy competition. The instructors often have us race each other doing sprints, and challenge us to do the most pushups and sit-ups in a given time period. In a class I attended a few weeks ago, we had two teams of 10 people race to do 20 pushups, one by one in each line while everyone else held a plank. Our team lost the first race, but we regrouped and pushed hard to win the second in record time!
Overall, CKO West Caldwell has helped me to shed pounds much quicker than I would have on my own. Their talented instructors and the dedicated people in my classes have kept me motivated to be the best me. Most importantly, I no longer need to spend hours on my elliptical because I can burn more fat and calories in a shorter amount of time at CKO. I look forward to the next 9 months and more medicine ball sprints, as well!

Step Up Your Down Time with CKO Kickboxing
Everyone becomes friends. There’s such a camaraderie... you’re working so hard with no distractions.
This amazing testimonial comes to us from CKO Totowa member, Jamie Shahin
In her own words...
Fitness has always been a part of my life, but two years ago my lower back began to hurt with no apparent injury. I even got to the point where I was no longer able to do my traditional gym activities such as lifting, running, and cycling. Then daily activities like walking, sitting, working, and driving were all becoming a challenge. I had gone to countless doctors, chiropractors, and did months of physical therapy. Nothing was helping and no one could figure out why I was having the pain. The doctors started talking about more MRI’s, cortisone shots, and even surgery. As a result I was discouraged, stopped being active, and gained almost 25 pounds.
I realized that my new lifestyle was not who I was, and I became extremely frustrated that I was not active anymore. Several friends of mine had been talking about CKO Kickboxing and how much they loved it. I was nervous that I would not be able to do it because of my back, but I was ready to make a change and get myself better without medical help. That was when I signed up for a free trial class at CKO Totowa. I was addicted immediately! My first class was with Sherrie, who I could tell was passionate about fitness. She made sure that I was doing the moves correctly in order to get the maximum results from my workout. I remember my first class being the most challenging thing I had ever done... yet I loved every minute of it. I signed up for a year commitment that night and it was the best thing I ever did! CKO Totowa not only got me back to being enthusiastic about fitness, but within a few short months, my back pain went away. All of my doctors were amazed that I was able to get better on my own. I think the focus on core and total body strength was what got me back to being healthy. I lost almost 20 pounds in the first year and to this day I have had no more back problems.
In the last two years, I have taken every instructor’s class and it still amazes me how passionate they are about what they do. One of the most unique things about CKO Kickboxing is that there are people of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels who are all doing the same class. The instructors challenge everyone to be their best and to work hard, all while making it fun. I love the classes so much that I plan my schedule around them!
Recently, I decided to make my health and fitness level more of a priority, so I started going to CKO Kickboxing 4-5 times a week. In the last three months, I’ve lost 8 more pounds, putting me back at the weight I was before my back injury. Not only did my injury go away and I lost all of the weight, but I am in better shape, more muscular, and my endurance has increased. CKO Kickboxing has given me the confidence to try new exercises and activities that I never thought I would be able to do, such as handstands and hanging crunches on the bag. Because of CKO Kickboxing and the awesome instructors, I am a completely different person both physically and mentally. I can say with certainty that if it weren’t for CKO, I may have given up completely on exercise and my health. I will be going on year three as a CKO Kickboxing member, and I can’t wait to see what new levels I will reach!
It's Friday! The perfect time for a feel-good, inspirational story to take us all into the weekend. This post comes to us from one of the owner's of CKO Freehold, Mike Sclafani.
In Mike's own words:
My brother and I were both athletes from five years old, all the way through college. Whether it was baseball for myself or soccer for Vincent, we were always active guys. As we got older and our involvement in competitive sports started to dwindle, so did our interest in working out. Once we were not competing at that intense High School, College or even Travel League level we started to lack the desire to stay fit. In our minds, there was nothing else to aim for.
For myself, one week of not working out turned into two, which then turned into years. Next thing you know, I am about to get married 35 pounds heavier than I was in college and I was only 28 years old. Something needed to change. I now had something to work for, but being out of the “gym” scene for so long and then trying to get back into it, I felt uncomfortable walking around not really having a plan. I was always trying to figure out what to do for each particular day. I would constantly gravitate to the treadmill and do a boring 30-40 minute run or I would tell myself “It’s only 10 songs on your iPod, you can do this.” It only took about a month, if even, before I was bored and needed to find something else. I was at work one day when a co-worker told me that I should come check out CKO Kickboxing because it was in a class format and I definitely wouldn't be bored. I was extremely skeptical at first because I thought classes were more women based and I would be the only guy there. She insisted that guys do this as well, so I went with her to the CKO Hoboken Madison location for a Free Trial Class. As promised, there were a bunch of guys there, so I immediately felt better about the situation. Literally one hour later, I was hooked. I could not believe an hour had even passed that quickly and I was DRENCHED. I joined ASAP and started going 5-6 times a week consistently. Some weeks I even went every day. I was absolutely obsessed with CKO Kickboxing and I ended up losing ALL of the weight I had gained since college in a few short months. Fast forward another two years, and I am now going into my second year of business as one of the owners of the CKO Freehold location, and have had the luxury of sharing my obsession with people all over Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Vincent was always the type to get into a routine. Whether he likes it or not, he is going to stick to his routine and that’s that. Unfortunately, his routine was a boring cycle of treadmill and elliptical, but he did not know any better. I had told him about CKO Kickboxing time and time again but he wouldn't break his routine. He truly believed that he was not “in shape enough” to do kickboxing classes with me. I told him he did not have to be in shape BEFORE CKO and that CKO Kickboxing will get you into shape! Literally, the only way that I could get Vincent into CKO was by OPENING a CKO, and even then he had to watch class first before he would try it. Low and behold, he is obsessed! Not only is he obsessed, he has lost over 40 pounds. He is now in charge of our children’s program and teaches classes for children ages 4-12. The two of us could not be happier with the transformation we have experienced from CKO Kickboxing and now we get to do it together, day in and day out! Moral of this story; Listen to your Little Brother because he is always right! What? No?
